About Us 3rd Sudbury Sea Scouts is a Scout section within 3rd Sudbury group, We run a mixed troop with boy’s and girl’s between 10 and 14 years of age. We meet every Thursday night, We start at 19.00hrs and finish at 21.30 hrs, taking only a break at Christmas . We run water activities through the summer. During the winter we teach coastal navigation and the theory needed for the summer season, along with all the usual activities that you might expect from a scout troop. such as CLIMBING, SHOOTING , CAMPING, PIONEERING, FIRST AID AND COOKING ON OPEN FIRES. 3rd Sudbury sea scouts is a smart, well disciplined troop . They have inspection once a week to make sure the high standards stay in place, at the end of the summer we have a parents evening called "laying up supper" where awards are given out for best attendance and smartest inspection , as well as best over all sea scout. The evening also gives us a fund raising opportunity by having a raffle . Activities During the summer the Sea Scouts spend their troop night’s on the water. Their main activities are kayaking , sailing and power boating ! All activities at Sea Scouts are run by qualified leaders and helpers, who have all been authorised by the Scout Association and have RYA and BCU qualifications. We run the water activities on a 4 mile stretch of the River Stour at Sudbury , We have The Croft and Mill Pool upstream and down river of us The River Stour trust have a new visitor centre at the site of the Cornard Lock, Fun and games are had at both end of the river. Our Scout Headquarters Built on the site of the old gas works in Quay Lane, the Headquarters was opened in 1989. A purpose built building consisting of entrance hall, fitted kitchen ,toilets including disabled access, a camp stores fully equipped to take the whole group camping. We have a large main hall big enough to rig a topper sailing dinghy inside, with under floor heating and our own built in climbing wall for those winter nights. There is also a leaders room off the main hall so leaders can keep a close eye on what the Sea Scouts get up too . Up stairs we have a committee room with trophy cabinet, this room also gets used as the girls changing room and as a class room from time to time. We are also lucky enough to have our own boathouse as an integral part of the headquarters. The boathouse is equipped with 15 plastic kayaks , 4 topper sailing dinghies, a wanderer sailing dinghy together with the use of other boats loaned by private individuals. The group also has a new Valiant DR520 Rib (money raised during 2007 and launched April 2008) used to make all water activities that bit safer . The boathouse door opens up directly on to a slip way out into the gasworks cut and the on to the main river. At the side of the headquarters there is a grassed area with enough space for camping and is also some times used as a dinghy park !
