On Christmas Eve 3rd Sudbury Sea Scouts
arrived at the Headquarters in Quay Lane, where the car park was like an
ice skating ring, and the gas works cut was frozen over. The ice was
over 30mm thick, which was set to make our trip all the more
interesting.
21 Sea Scout dressed and then decorated their
kayaks and canoes in festive decorations before setting out onto the
River Stour. We had to smash our way through the ice which took an hour
to get out on to the main river. Once on the main river we made good
time paddling down river to the River Stour Trust’s Visitor and
Educational Centre (VEC) at the site of the Millennium lock.
Leaders, helpers and parents helped with cooking
all the food before transporting the food to the VEC. Sea Scouts were
joined by family and friends to enjoy the food and drinks before having
a group photo taken outside the VEC. We then headed back up the river to
the Scout HQ.
This trip was so much fun it may well be back in
2010.
I would like to thank everyone who helped make this
event possible, and a special thanks to the helpers who helped raise the
money for the trip earlier in the year.
