Sudbury Sea Scouts attended the National Sea Scout 100 year Jamboree, as our
weeks summer Camp.
The Jamboree was
held at the National Water Sports Centre at Holme Pierrepont,
Nottingham. Our group was made up of Sea Scouts, Explorer Scouts,
leaders and helpers and not forgetting “Alice” Julies horse.
We arrived on Saturday 1st August and set up
camp in heavy rain along with others that arrived in the morning. Sunday morning
started dry so we made the most of it and had a good look around the site and
water sports centre. Throughout the week, the Sea Scouts mixed well with Scouts from
all over the world, including Sweden and New Zealand to name but a few. There
were lots of activities laid on; both land based and on the water. Water –skiing and white water rafting went down well with
everyone that took part.
As did
sailing, white water kayaking and rowing. Leaders also got to try new activities
like windsurfing and archery. Every night parties were held and everyone had a
great time.
We had more rain through out the week and the Camp site was
wet and very muddy for most of the week. Despite the weather everyone worked
through it and kept smiling, and made the most of it when the sun did come out.
We camped in very cramped conditions and our gazebo leaked
like a sieve, but the Sea Scouts worked well on site and cooked and cleaned up
every day. To help with these duties we split the troop into two watch’s Port &
Starboard. James held a tent and sometime a full kit inspection to keep things
in order.
On the Friday evening while the weather was dry we decided
to get the mess tent down, and by 09:15 on the Saturday we had started moving
all our kit off site. (Most of it on foot!).
The van was loaded and the coach arrived just after 11:00 hrs, one last
photo and we departed.
Everyone had a great experience, so we would like to thank
everyone who helped make it big success.
We
look forward to our next international Jamboree. I would also like to thank the leaders and helpers from 3rd
Sudbury who worked hard all week and gave up their time to take the Sea Scouts
away.
Yours in Scouting,
Rob Palmer
