2007 Laying Up Supper
On Saturday 10th November 3rd Sudbury Sea Scouts held their annual Laying up Supper Awards night. An evening for the Scouts to show their parents, friends and Scouting guest’s just what they have been getting up to over the past 12 months. This year’s supper was attended by John Mabb County Commissioner for Suffolk.
The evening started at 19.00 hrs at the Groups Headquarters in Quay Lane, Sudbury. The troops Patrol leaders introduced the sketches as the Sea Scouts showed everyone how to rig toppers, equipment used on winter camps and sailing trips.
Earlier in the day some of the Sea Scouts helped prepare a buffet for the guests, with the help and guidance of leader’s helpers and members of the Quay Lane Explorer Scout Unit. This was served after the sketches with Tea’s and Coffees, guests then had a chance to talk to leaders and have a look around the Scout Headquarters and see the power point slide show of Sea Scouts in action created by Assistant Sea Scout Leader James Duncan.
After the Supper we turned to the formal part of the evening and the presentations of Awards, books, trophies and Shields that were presented to the Scouts. Gaining awards this year were Elena Barry for BEST NEWCOMER, Melody Gould for BEST ATTENDANCE, and Josh Finbow for BEST SAILOR.
James Walsh received the LEADERS RECOGNITION AWARD for raising over £160 doing a sponsored hill walk to raise money towards the Groups New Safety Boat. Jack Parkinson received the award for the most improved Scout in 2007.
For the first time in over 12 years the Patrol Leaders named and presented the BOOT AWARD at Laying up Supper and Elena Barry received PL Achievement Award this time. Jessica Appleby made the Presentation on behalf of the Patrol Leaders.
Jessica was also presented with three Awards herself, for BEST PATROL, BEST KAYAKING SKILLS, presented by Mike Dodd of Sudbury Canoe Club. She also gained the most prestigious Award for BEST OVERALL SEA SCOUT 2007 presented by the Sea Scout Leader Rob Palmer.
RYA Dinghy Instructor Nick Powell presented the Sea Scouts with certificates for stage 1 and 2 Youth Sailing, Patrol Leader Josh Finbow and Explorer Scout Katy Meekings were also presented with their National Level 2 Dinghy Sailing.
Scouting badges and awards were also given out on the night to Scouts that had completed the work need for the badges.
We had just enough time to invest two new Sea Scouts into the Troop. John Mabb addressed the Parents, leaders and the Sea Scouts for their smart uniform and for their hard work over the past year both on activities and with the fundraising for the new safety boat.
Everyone had a great evening reflecting on the year that saw scouting turn 100 years old.
Next year Sea Scouts celebrates 60 years of Sea Scouting in Sudbury and the programme is already up on our website at
